Sheet Screen Mesh Installation

Required Tools:

  • Stanley knife, wire cutters, scissors, or a rotary tool
  • Sharpie or marker
  • Ruler
  • Duct tape

To install your new mesh screen, using a ruler, mark out the perimeter to be cut. However, make the marked perimeter slightly smaller than the size of your sheet, (eg: if the sheet is 300*300mm, mark out 280*280mm).

Using a Stanley knife, wire cutters, scissors, or a rotary tool (depending on what you have / your preference) cut out the marked hole. Just be aware, if you are using wire cutters or scissors, don't cut too much material at one time. Polypropylene can crack if you try to cut too much at a time. Best practice is to make small cuts to reduce the risk of cracking.

Finally using a strong adhesive like duct tape, secure your mesh sheet to the lid. If your cricket habitat is a storage container you got from the department store, or hardware store, it is likely made of polypropylene (most large plastic containers that size are). This means you won’t be able to use liquid glues (as it doesn’t stick). I have found that duct tape works fine though. If your lid has curves, use a Stanley knife to cut around the edges so the tape conforms correctly to your lid.
